A brief history Dart leagues have existed in Racine for at least 20 years, according to Chuck Beth, a long-time player and owner of Racine Amusement, which supplies electronic dart boards and other amusements to area establishments.Beth started playing darts in 1988 and now serves as organizer of the leagues.
"It has really grown over the years," he said, noting that somewhere between 400 and 500 people attend the end-of-season banquet and tournament held each year.
And contrary to many people's image of this game, which is believed to have originated in merry olde England, there are just as many women - if not more - than men who play in Racine dart leagues.Players range in age from 21 to their 60s, and there are not only men's and women's leagues, but co-ed leagues, couples' leagues, leagues for specific games (301 and Cricket) and even leagues for second shift workers, which start at 11:30 p.m.
Racine leagues play on electronic dart boards with plastic-tipped darts, Beth said.Such boards make it easy for anyone to play, because they do all the calculating and scoring and let the players concentrate on polishing their throwing skills and having fun.Not only do the electronic boards calculate the score, but they can send that information, via phone lines, back to a central computer at Racine Amusement, where it is then transferred to a Web site, according to Beth.

"Some people want a Harley, or a car, or a flower on their flights," Beth said.

But friendly Sure, competition is an essential element of this sport, but newcomers need not be intimidated by people who've been playing a long time or who are really good, Beth said.
"It's the kind of game in which you don't have to be an expert at to have fun," he said.
There are plenty of people who are really good at it, he said, but at the same time, the games also offer a handicap option, which allows unskilled shooters more chances to throw.Electronic dart boards will automatically calculate the handicaps, Beth said.

The basic game of darts is not a difficult one to learn, Beth said, noting that his 13-year-old daughter loves to play.
"She wants to try and beat me," he said. When asked if she had done so, Beth chuckled and replied "no comment."
What advice do he and others have for the novice dart player?"Have fun and win," said Beth.
