Arkansas Tech University head softball coach Kristie Betancur submitted her resignation to the school Wednesday in order to concentrate full time on her career at In The Zone Softball Academy in Morrilton. Betancur, who started the softball program at Tech, coached the Golden Suns through their first three seasons and compiled a 63-56 record, including a program-best 27 wins this past season. She will serve as facility coordinator and instructor for In The Zone, which she and her husband founded earlier this summer with partners Jerry and Wendy Collins. In a press release obtained Wednesday by The Courier, Betancur thanked the administration at Tech for allowing her to build the softball program from scratch and explained her reasoning behind the move. "I have been presented with a tremendous opportunity to train young athletes in all aspects of the game at In The Zone," she said. "The state is just reaching maturity in regards to fast-pitch softball, and there is a tremendous need for quality, one-on-one instruction. Today's athletes are in need of specialized attention to bring their game to the championship level. "Both my husband and myself really feel that the Lord has called us in this direction. This opportunity allows me to spend more daytime with my children and still be around the sport I love." In a release from Arkansas Tech Sports Information, Tech head football coach and athletic director Steve Mullins thanked Betancur for her work with the softball program and wished her the best of luck.

The story of her trip actually begins with her sister, Mattie, 7, and Kristie Betancur, coach of the Golden Suns women's softball team at Arkansas Tech University. Betancur has been giving private pitching lessons to Marley, and met Mattie, who is battling cancer. That meeting brought back plenty of memories for Betancur. When the coach was a child, her twin battled leukemia. As a result, her family has experienced many of the same challenges as the Medlocks.

"Mattie is so courageous," Betancur said. "She just keeps plugging away. She really has so much faith."

Betancur then hit upon the idea of trying to set up a trip for Mattie and her family to the World Cup competition.

So instead of a trip for the whole family, Betancur took Marley and her cousin, Austin Medlock, of Guy to the competition.

Pambianchi, who spent just two months as an assistant with Tech's fledgling softball program, was promoted to interim head coach in July 2005 after Kristie Betancur resigned to pursue other business opportunities. Pambianchi was a three-year starter All-GSC performer at Arkansas-Monticello. She is just the second head coach in the brief history of Tech's softball program, which was added in 2003. The Golden Suns have compiled a 63-56 overall record in that time, including a program-best 27 wins last season.
