Allen Bestwick is the play-by-play announcer for NASCAR on NBC & TNT.In Bestwick's first season on NBC he earned critical acclaim for his informative play-by-play and exceptional race calls. One of his most memorable calls came during NBC's first race of the 2001 season, the Pepsi 400 in Daytona. As Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the checkered flag Bestwick said, "Dale Earnhardt Jr., using lessons learned from his father to go from sixth to first and score the victory in the Pepsi 400."
Bestwick, the "Voice of NASCAR" on MRN Radio from 1988-2000, joined NBC Sports in February 1999 to host the network's coverage of the inaugural Pennzoil 400 from Homestead-Miami Speedway in November 1999.He has also called the American LeMans Series on NBC since July 1999.
In addition to his NBC and TNT duties, Bestwick also hosts "Inside Winston Cup" on Speed Channel. It is the only know national sports show with three current athletes as analysts.Current NASCAR Winston Cup drivers Michael Waltrip, Ken Schraeder and Johnny Benson work with Bestwick on the show.
Bestwick served as the lead announcer for the Motor Racing Network (MRN) radio broadcasts, where he has called more than 75 races each season and nearly every NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch series race from1988 to 2000.MRN broadcasts most NASCAR races through more than 500 affiliate stations across the United States. He also hosted two weekly NASCAR programs on cable television, "This Week in NASCAR" on Speedvision cable network, and "Inside Winston Cup Racing" which airs on both Speedvision and Fox Sports Net.Bestwick is a member of Turner Sports' NASCAR coverage team, and also appears on ESPN's "NASCAR Shop Talk."
When calling a race, Bestwick attempts to maintain a crucial balance he refers to as "The Rule of Mom."The balance is to educate the casual viewer who may be discovering the sport for the first time without insulting the hard-core race fans. While he is explaining a race situation he pictures his parents sitting in their living room.He wants his mother, the casual fan, to understand a scenario or term without insulting his father, a hard-core race fan.
A native of Coventry, R.I., Bestwick was first introduced to auto racing at a young age when his father built and raced stock cars at a local track. He began his broadcasting career at the age of 15.
He recently moved from the Charlotte, N.C. area to his native Rhode Island, with wife, Melanie, and sons, Allen III and Jason.
