"Overall, we are pleased with the program," said N-K High School Principal Bob Bestul.

"We are going to take what we learned this year and make the program that much better," said Bestul.

This program enables students to have more individualized instruction, which Bestul noted is probably the biggest reason it has been a success.
Students enrolled in the ALP program can participate in vocational courses, such as industrial arts and advanced wood classes, and may be eligible for participation in extracurricular activities, such as dances.
"We want to keep them involved as much as we can or as much as they want to be," said Bestul. "They also have the freedom to not be involved."
As an educator, Bestul believes in the public school system. However, he noted it isn't designed for everyone.
"There are kids that a seven period day with lectures just doesn't work for them because of various events that have occurred in their lives," he said. "Having a program like this really meets the needs of those students."
Bestul said if the program can get those students through those tough times in their lives and help them achieve their high school diploma, it is definitely going to benefit them down the road.
