Melodie Bestor, an English teacher at Orem High School, became a volunteer after wanting to find something productive to do with her time on Sunday evenings.
Since July, Bestor has served from 5 to 8 p.m. every Sunday at the front desk in the hospital lobby. Her job includes directing people to locations in the hospital and answering general questions.
Bestor is one of the first people patients come in contact with at the hospital.
"One time, a really old man walked through the door with his arm bleeding profusely," she said."He was so calm and simply said, 'I think I need some stitches but don't know where to go.' I walked him to the emergency room, and the whole time he was pleasant and happy."
Bestor said she finds fulfillment in helping people during stressful times.

The opportunity to be a volunteer is very rewarding, Bestor said.
"It's very fulfilling to know you're doing a volunteer service that no one is paying you for," she said.
