The Air Wing of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard is to become a unit of the police force in the form of an Air Guard, according to Captain Garnet Best, Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard.

He revealed this on Friday as he delivered an address on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of the commissioning of the Coast Guard, during a ceremony at the Coast Guard Air Station, Piarco.

Best said the Air Wing, which commenced operations in 1966, "will be making a quantum leap this year. It is envisaged that it will become a unit of the (police) force with an expanded role as an Air Guard".

He said it was expected that the transformation would be accompanied by the necessary planning and legislative and jurisdictional arrangements that were critical to the command, administration and operation of a professional air unit.

He referred to statements made over 50 years ago by one military expert who said: "Air power is the dominant factor in war. It may not win the war by itself alone but without it no major war can be won."

Best said this statement was still valid today, and disclosed that the primary focus of the Coast Guard's Air Wing over the last year has been to "systematically upgrade its equipment and personnel". He said over eight pilots had successfully completed training as part of the upgrade efforts and were now contributing significantly to enhancing the operational efficiency of the unit.

He also said the Coast Guard has entered into "a partnership with several fishing communities to provide training for fishermen", explaining that this initiative was "spawned from unhappy maritime criminal incidents on the southern coastline of Trinidad".

Over 600 fishermen, he said, would benefit from training in maritime safety, navigation, survival at sea, first-aid and communication. He added that the initiative would commence in Cedros and Icacos and would later be extended to other maritime communities.

Best said the partnership between the Coast Guard and the fishermen was expected to "bear fruit through a co-ordinated effort to reduce illegal and unwanted criminal incidents along the coast line".
