South Kent College has now seen the first candidate, Allyson Best qualify in Customer Service.

"I‘m fairly new to the industry. I've only been in it for just over a year" confesses Allyson Best, a bathroom designer at Verrall & Parks in Eastbourne. "So, I thought it would be a good idea to find some industry training." She adds: "I had been looking around for training and the first thing I found was information on the Customer Service NVQ, in Bathrooms And Kitchens Magazine. As customer service is so important, I thought, that's a good stating point."

Company support Allyson called the Bathrooms And Kitchen Industry Training hotline, printed in the magazine, and was immediately directed to her nearest college. However, she is keen to point out that the support of her company was instrumental in her taking the training. "To be accepted on the course, I had to first get the permission of my manager", she said. "The company I work for is really good in encouraging its staff to take any industry training and was fully supportive of me enrolling on the course."

More than meets eye The NVQ Level in Customer Service spans a variety of topics from sales techniques, through to retail law. Allyson says: "They teach you the whole sales process from how to identify different types of customers, through to how to deal with them. That even includes the difficult ones." She adds: "But you realise that there is more to Customer Service then just people coming into the showroom and you selling to them.
    ...
Allyson says the course gave her a good grounding and understanding of customer service. But when asked if studying the course has helped her gain more orders, or improve her customers' shopping experiences she laughs, saying; "You'll have to ask them." But then, admits; "Actually, I suppose it has, as customer service is so important in bathroom and kitchen sales."

Although Allyson would happily recommend the course to other designers, she issues a word of advice: "If you think it sounds like a good idea, then yes, I would definitely say take the course. But you have to have an interest in it. You do need to put some effort into it."

Continued education And Allyson's still not shirking from her bathroom studies, as she is now genning up on her design and product knowledge. She says: "I have more training coming up. I have some training set up with Ideal Standard and Bette on its baths. I've also got some training with Logicom, on its computer aided design package." Allyson started her Bathrooms And Kitchens Industry Training in August and, following eight months of study, is the first candidate to achieve the NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service.
