A.K."Archie" Best was born and raised on an Iowa farm and educated in Iowa public schools. He holds both BME and MME degrees from Drake University. He served as a Musician in the 56th Army Band in Japan, and has been a Professional musician and Music educator. He also has been a Community symphony orchestra conductor and Community concert board member. He was an advisor to the Michigan State Arts Council for 8 years. A.K. has been a fly tier and fly fisherman for over thirty years. He has lectured and demonstrated fly fishing and fly tying from coast to coast and taught classes in fly tying in Colorado, Missouri, New Hampshire, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Wyoming, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Calgary, Alberta Canada, California, Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Toronto, Canada, and the National Fly Tiers Symposium in New Jersey. He is well known not only for his skills in those realms but also as a sage and often humorous sidekick to John Gierach in many of their mutual adventures.
A.K. has authored several books, including "Production Fly Tying", Pruett Pub. Co. Boulder, CO., "Dying and Bleaching Natural Fly Tying Materials", and "A. K.'s Fly Box", Lyons & Burford, NY. A fourth book, currently untitled, is being written at this time and is a collection of fly fishing stories about fishing alone. He is also the Fly Tying Tool Consultant for Orvis. He has authored over 100 articles for the following magazines, Mid Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide, Fly Rod and Reel Magazine, Flyfishing and Fly tying, and The Bamboo Fly Rod. He is featured on the Internet in the Fly Rod & Reel Web Site, the FBN Web Site, and The Virtual Fly Shop.
