While Michael is proud of his team's technical expertise, he becomes even more passionate when he talks about their caring attitude. Michael believes that security is as much about customer service and public relations as it is about policing.
Michael says, "Our favourite words are - how can we help? Our clients are the patients, their families and visitors, and they are also the staff here at the hospital."
Michael trains his employees to work in partnership with physicians, nurses, and other staff members. They take the time to get to know long-term patients, understand their quirks and needs, and they can spot a problem before it gets out of hand.
After graduating from Fanshawe's Law and Security Administration program in 1985 Michael became a Security Supervisor at London's Victoria Hospital. A few years later he moved into the role of Fire Prevention Supervisor, acquiring his diploma in Fire Protection and Prevention along the way and serving as a volunteer fire fighter in Southwest Oxford County.
Michael was hired to head fire and security services at Parkwood Hospital in 1993, and in the years that followed, Ontario government restructuring of health care services added St. Joseph's Hospital and later, the mental health facilities in London and St. Thomas to his portfolio of responsibilities.
Michael has been an active volunteer in local minor hockey and other sports; he served for two years as a member and Acting Chair of the Ingersoll Police Services Board. As well, Michael takes seriously his responsibility to welcome college students on placement at the hospitals and to put them to work in meaningful ways.
