September 27, 2005 - Atlanta - Atlanta resident Sid Besmertnik was one of 22 young leaders from 12 different countries who came together in Israel for World ORT's inaugural International Next Generation mission.
The participants, aged between 24 and 50, represented ORT organizations from the major fundraising countries - the USA, Britain and Switzerland - as well as operational countries such as Russia, Mexico, Uruguay, Ukraine, and Lithuania, where ORT has schools or programs. Mr. Besmertnik is a member of both the board of the Atlanta Chapter of American ORT and the national board.
"It's very important for American ORT that Sid represented us on this mission," said Atlanta resident Joe Cohen, national President of American ORT.
...
"As a member of the Next Generation of American ORT, Sid saw the schools and programs that we talk about and support. Now Sid can communicate what he saw to others, thereby spreading the word and at the same time, developing the skills needed for the next generation of our organization's leadership."
For Sid Besmertnik, the four-day mission was invigorating.
"I met and became new friends with 21 other World ORT Next Generation members from England, Lithuania, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, Uruguay and even United States," he said. "But the highlight of our mission was visits with students from ORT schools."
Participants visited ORT Netanya-Yad Lvovich and the Bedouin ORT Wadi Salame (a Bedouin school) and Ort Megadim Karmiel.
Besmertnik said he met with students from ORT Netanya Yad Lvovich who participate in ORT's Sunflowers program, where they volunteer to meet and tutor children in hospitals who are fighting cancer.
...
This museum looks quite professional and is maintained by the students," said Besmertnik.
"The key to all of these ORT programs is that they were developed to enhance the students' education, life growth and cooperation between others. From a curriculum standpoint the programs are truly leading edge for Israel. For Tikkun Olam, the cooperation program and Sunflowers program help them develop as good leaders and participants in society," said Besmertnik. -
