1. The Yale Herald - October 27, 2006 - Rubber Ducky, you’re the one—for fundraising

It's the newest fundraising trend, said Nikki Besitko, director of Best Buddies Connecticut: rubber duck races, designed to draw eyes and checkbooks.
...
One of the advantages for Best Buddies of hosting such an eccentric fundraiser, Besitko said, was its accessibility. "Seeing that it only cost five dollars to adopt a duck makes people realize that they can afford it, they can be a part of it," she said. "And besides, it was ducks-something different and unique." But the money adds up: With over 7,000 ducks sold, Best Buddies volunteers are still counting up the final numbers. The non-profit easily raised $35,000-by playing with children's toys.
With the sun shining down on the backs of volunteers and rubber ducks alike, $35,000 on a Parents' Weekend morning is a pretty impressive take-and the volunteers are planning repeat performances. When Besitko and her colleagues bring the duck races back to New Haven next fall, will they do anything different? Laughing, as if to belie the organizational difficulties of sending thousands of ducks floating down a river, Besitko shook her head and said no. "We'd just like to sell more ducks." -
