Dr. Carlo Besio, who's treated ailing horses, dogs, cats and even sheep from Portola Valley to Pescadero for the past 40 years, has retired.
The years have gone by so quickly, says the veterinarian. He grew up on Avy Avenue in Menlo Park and has fond memories of riding his horse as a young boy from his home through the undeveloped fields, valleys and foothills. While a student at Bellarmine College Preparatory, he did odd jobs at the Menlo Circus Club. Years later, he was the vet on call for the club's annual horse show.
Dr. Besio, a graduate of the University of California, Davis, started his career with what's called an ambulatory equine practice in which he would travel from Portola Valley, Woodside and Los Altos as far as Pescadero to Pacifica on the coastside to treat large animals, mostly horses.
In 1962, he began building the Portola Valley Veterinary Clinic at 808 Portola Road, which opened in 1964.
After a lengthy search, Dr. Besio said he found an outstanding veterinarian to take over the practice. She is Dr. Darcy Quam, a 1990 University of California, Davis, graduate with excellent credentials. She has eight years of practice experience and has published a number of scientific papers.
