Mr. Mohammed Beshari

Mr. Auchi and the AAO led and sponsored high level delegations made up of Arab, British and French dignitaries, including Mr. Mohammed Beshari, President of the Federation of French Muslims and Mrs Khadidja Abdul Khali, President of the Union of Muslim Women of France, to the region, meeting with H E President Lahoud of Lebanon, the Mufti of Lebanon and with other religious and political figures asking and encouraging them to use their good offices for securing the release of the two journalists and their Syrian driver.

Mohammed Beshari, head of the French Federation of French Muslims, who travelled to Baghdad with the delegation, said the trip had been necessary and they had been able to "make our message heard that France is not at war with Islam and the Muslim community."

"Radicals wanted to execute them because of the links these journalists had with certain foreign powers," Mohammed Beshari, who is head of the Federation of French Muslims, told the newspaper L'Est Republicain.

"We obviously denied this rumour, especially as these two journalists are very well known in the Arab world, in particular" in the Palestinian territories and in Jordan, said Beshari.
