CLAY COUNTY, FL -- Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler says a suspected car burglar is behind bars, thanks to just one person.
"An alert citizen happened to look out the window and saw this guy who didn't belong, called police and we took him into custody," said Beseler.
Police believe that one suspect could be connected to about a dozen other car burglaries.
"You multiply that one arrest by dozens and it can make a difference," said Beseler.
...
Beseler credits the "Like it, Lock it" campaign for the raised awareness.
The campaign warns people about the latest car hopping trend, where burglars go door-to-door, checking for unlocked cars, then taking what's inside.
"No matter where you are, no matter how safe you feel, you should always be protecting yourself," said Beseler.
The upside, Beseler says, is the campaign has people more aware. The downside, he says, is that cars are still being found unlocked.
"We're still seeing cars unlocked, so people have to take some responsibility," said Beseler.
Beseler says having one crook behind bars is great, but a bigger effort from neighbors to put more behind bars would be even better.
