BIOGRAPHY — RANDALL L. BESECKER
Mr. Besecker was born in Greenville, Ohio in 1958 and was raised on a family farm that at its pinnacle consisted of over 1,100 acres of prime cropland in western Ohio.He graduated from The Ohio State University in June, 1980 with a B.S. in Agriculture, majoring in Agricultural Economics with emphasis in agricultural commodity marketing.Subsequently, he remained at the University to complete his graduate work receiving an MBA in June, 1982.Mr. Besecker began his grain trading career in July, 1982 as a Commodity Merchant with Cargill, Inc. in their Commodity Marketing Division office located in West Des Moines, Iowa.There he gained a solid grounding in the dynamics of grain movement through domestic (processor, feedlot) and export channels.Later, in June, 1984, Besecker was transferred to Pasco, Washington to assume responsibility for merchandising Soft White Wheat and Barley on the Snake/Columbia River system through west coast export terminals.
In June, 1985, he accepted the position of Marketing Consultant with the agricultural marketing/consulting firm of Richard A. Brock and Associates located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Later promoted to the position of Vice President of Consulting, Besecker supervised the firm's operations in the absence of the President, conducting all phases related to consulting including market analysis, strategy formulation, communication, and execution of the company's recommendations.The firm's clientele consisted of agricultural production operations ranging in size from 600 to 17,000 acres located in the Midwest, South, and Pacific Northwest as well as commercial feed- and food-based companies.
In April, 1988, he accepted the position of Senior Grain Merchandiser with Central Soya Company, Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a subsidiary of the Italian conglomerate Ferruzzi/ Montedison.At Central Soya, Besecker was responsible for trading the company's Corn and Soft Red Winter Wheat positions.In September, 1990, he was promoted to Location Grain Manager of Ferruzzi's U.S. subsidiary, Mississippi River Grain, Inc., located in Davenport, Iowa.There he oversaw all elements of the barge-loading terminal's operations including merchandising, accounting, personnel, and facility management.Due to corporate reorganization and consolidation, Besecker was transferred to the company's New York City office of Ferruzzi Trading USA, Inc., accepting the position of Export Merchandiser responsible for originating grain for world export trade.
In February, 1994, Besecker accepted the position of Commodity Manager with MoorMan's, Inc., the livestock feed manufacturing subsidiary of MoorMan Manufacturing Company headquartered in Quincy, Illinois.There he oversaw the establishment and execution of corporate purchasing strategies with regard to feedgrains, protein meals, and fibers for the company's manufacturing plants located in the Midwest, South, and Southeast.In addition, his responsibilities included management of the company's hedging activities, including the cattle placement program and the swine marketing operations, establishing commodity price levels for feed pricing via weekly reviews, conducting the physical purchasing of specific ingredients for the facilities, and chairing the monthly update meetings with corporate top management.
In June, 1996, Mr. Besecker accepted the position of Vice President of Grains with Frontier Risk Management in Chicago, Illinois.At Frontier, his work involved both commercial users and producers of grains, oilseeds and oilseed products who utilized futures and options as risk management tools.In compliance with federal regulations, Besecker successfully passed the National Commodity Futures Series III exam administered by the National Futures Association (NFA) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), granting him full rights to conduct activities as a licensed commodity broker.As a commodity broker, activities centered on client prospecting, account servicing, and trade execution.
In September, 1997, he accepted the position of Director, Commodity Risk Management with Bil Mar Foods, a division of Sara Lee Corporation.Within this capacity, he reported to the Vice President of Supply Chain and was charged with managing the company's commodity risk exposure related to the purchase of feed ingredients for turkey feed formulations.Activities centered on market analysis, strategy formulation, and trade execution as part of the company's desire to manage input costs.Transferring to Sara Lee Foods' Cincinnati operations in June, 1999, Mr. Besecker oversaw the company's procurement and commodity risk management of all feedgrain-, foodgrain-, and dairy-based ingredients and raw materials procurement for Bil Mar Foods' turkey growout operations, Sara Lee's Bakery operations, and Sara Lee US Foods' meat processing operations.
In February, 2003, Besecker accepted the position of Vice President with the agricultural marketing/consulting firm of Rouse Marketing, Inc., headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.In this position, he provided consultative and outsource services specializing in animal fats and vegetable oils for the animal agricultural and biofuels industries.
In September, 2004, Besecker formed the commodity consulting and risk management firm, Besecker Associates, to provide commodity management services to those involved with grain- and oilseed-based commodities in the food, feed, and biofuels industries.
Randall and his family reside outside Lebanon, Ohio.
