Dr. Joan Berzoff to present at NASW Vermont Annual Conference

NASW VT's Annual Conference Committee is planning another Annual Conference with a thought-provoking, timely, and universal topic. The Committee is very excited to be able to bring Dr. Berzoff to the Conference as the keynote speaker. Joan is the Director of the End of Life Certificate Program at Smith College School for Social Work and will be presenting on end of life issues in The Transformed Mourner: Changes in Self that Lead to Social Action. Her intellectual curiosity and engaging presentation promises for a rich, thought-provoking, and memorable conference. Joan lectures widely on end of life issues and the Chapter is very pleased to be able to bring her to you, especially following the attention end of life issues received earlier in the year. "Our clients, like ourselves, suffer inevitable losses that are simply part of living. What we do with these losses, how we metabolize them, how we make meaning from them, how our own ideals are changed through them, how we shape our loss narratives, can often lead to new meaning making and to action and to changes in the self. This talk will use examples from film, from clinical practice, and from the personal, to examine how losses transform the mourner and facilitate changes in the mourner's ego, ego ideal and self, that can lead to new forms of social action." Joan has co-edited: Living with Dying: A Handbook for End of Life Care Practitioners published in 2004. Dr. Berzoff was the recipient of one of the first Social Work Leader Awards from the Project on Death in America and was a recipient of the Outstanding Scholar Award from the National Academies of Practice. Currently she is the only social worker serving on the Compassionate Care Advisory Board for Aetna. She is also in private practice in Northampton, Mass.
