   Mr. Clooney, 40, recently met Maria Bertrand, 27, at the Globe restaurant on St. Laurent Boulevard, where movie stars love to dine when shooting films in Montreal.

   Ms. Bertrand, a green-eyed, 5-foot-9 brunette, is a part-time bartender at the restaurant and a former model who has appeared in the fashion pages of The Gazette. The couple have been spotted playing basketball at her health club, The Sanctuary, as well as at the BIS restaurant and the Hotel Vogue bar.
   
   Yesterday, Ms. Bertrand was on the Montreal film set of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the feature film Mr. Clooney is directing that is based on the bizarre life of game-show host Chuck Barris, who claimed to be a CIA hitman.

   Ms. Bertrand was playing one of the bachelorettes in a sequence recreating The Dating Game TV show from the late 1960s.

   In a People magazine article, Ms. Bertrand was described by a friend as athletic and not overly glamorous but definitely ''very, very good-looking.'' She is also strong-willed and does what she pleases, according to the report.
   
   The manager of the Globe restaurant declined to comment on Ms. Bertrand, saying she had a business to run and no time to answer questions about an employee. A spokesman at Giovanni's, a Montreal modelling agency where Ms. Bertrand began her modelling career several years ago, also declined to comment.
   
   The Confessions set has been off-limits to reporters since shooting began.
   
   Ms. Bertrand has already appeared in six low-budget movies, most of which were shot in her hometown. She has appeared in Federal Protection, a drama starring Armand Assante; Summer, a coming of age story; Largo Winch, a Canadian TV series; and All Souls, a TV series from U.S. producer Aaron Spelling.
