Fred Bertram , a captain in the Canton Fire Department , has been Fire Science coordinator at Stark State since 1997 and an instructor at the school since 1992.
Fire Science instructors have worked to develop realistic training programs for students , Bertram said. The buildings in the training complex are helping to add realism to the classes.
High school students in the tech prep program started as juniors and spend two days per week in basic fire training. As seniors , the students are trained as emergency medical technicians. There are 17 juniors and 13 seniors from around the county in the program this year , Bertram said.
The students earn 7 credit hours toward an associate's degree in fire science. They also are qualified to begin working with a fire department when they graduate high school.
As part of classroom training , tech prep students have been assigned to the two fire trucks in the new fire station. During the classes , Bertram and the staff will conduct the equivalent of a fire drill , only in this case the students are the responding firefighters. When the fire call sounds , they must scramble for gear and trucks and head out to either the burn building or tower.
Students battle flames and smoke in the burn building and on the tower. Both are used to teach safety methods for search and rescue in hot and smoky conditions.
Any time you go into a building as a firefighter , you don't know if you're going to come back out , Bertram said. The training center helps students work on ways to get out.
It's realistic , but it's safe , Bertram said.
Area fire chiefs said the Fire Science Program and complex eliminates the need to travel to Columbus or Cleveland for specialized training. The tech prep program , meanwhile , introduces teen-agers to firefighting and prepares them for a career.
