   "This comes at just the right time, as we surpass $100 million in gifts," said Rev. Ed Bertram, campaign director of For the Sake of the Church, which has a goal of doubling the enrollment of LCMS students at the CUS schools and raising $400 million in endowments for those students' tuition.
   
   "The foundation's challenge grant will give us great momentum toward raising the next $100 million," Bertram said.

   "Strong endowments are sorely needed by LCMS campuses during these trying financial times," said Bertram, who indicated that donors have designated more than 90 percent of endowment gifts "directly to the campus of their choice."
   
   "Both Thrivent and For the Sake of the Church leadership realize that our success depends on collaboration among the Concordias in building endowments, just as they have successfully done in educational efforts," Bertram said. "We hope to reach every congregation and their members to encourage heartfelt participation in educating leaders for the church of the future."
