As they attempt to break the tie with the Russians, the Canadians will skate in front of raucous home-ice crowds during the 2006 edition of the event, Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Vancouver, Kelowna and Kamloops.
"Any time this tournament's in Canada, it's pretty nuts," said Boston College sophomore Dan Bertram, a member of Team Canada, when contacted at the start of exhibition play at the WJC.
...
The Russians have a very strong team," Bertram said. "You go into these tournaments - a short-term competition - you don't know what can happen, what team gets together, bonds the quickest, goes to battle with each other. We're just looking forward to every game, and hopefully we'll work hard and compete as best as we can. And hopefully we'll win when we're there."
After a nine-goal, eight-assist performance in 39 games as a BC freshman last winter, Bertram played for Team Canada's Under-17 team in two tournaments and the Under-18 team in one event last spring and summer. But his efforts there didn't guarantee him a spot with the WJC team. The 18-year-old native of Calgary had to survive a tryout camp in the summer and then another camp earlier this month.
"It's just as hard, and everybody competes and battles," said Bertram, a second-round pick of Chicago in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. "You come in there competing for a spot, so it's high pressure. So it's been a great experience, overall, to make the team, for sure."
Adjusting to playing with guys who you competed against for a spot on the team hasn't been difficult for Bertram.
...
"It's kind of funny, I've got a linemate - Nate Gerbe - on the U.S., and then I've got a starting goaltender [Marblehead, Mass. native Cory Schneider] there," said Bertram. "It will be cool. I think we play them in the last game of the round robin, but it'll be a neat experience, for sure."
Through 14 games this season, Bertram is the Eagles' second-leading scorer with 15 points (five goals, 10 assists). With Team Canada he hopes to do a little bit of everything.
"I'm going to be a hard-working guy that's going to have to compete every night," said Bertram. -
