But Human Resources Director Cindy Bertram takes the term "dog lover" to a new level.
A couple years ago, when Cindy's younger sister had a baby and her own son was already 16, her nurturing instinct kicked in big time.
...
That's where Cindy found her very first dog, an apricot poodle named Rocky.
But Rocky wasn't enough. One Saturday at the Dallas Farmers Market while Rod was putting vegetables in the car, Cindy came across an SPCA Adoption Center.
...
Cindy asked.
"No," he said.
...
It wasn't much later when Rocky passed away and Cindy decided she wanted another dog. Another TEG family member, June Antonisse, told Cindy about the Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue, Inc.
...
Cindy volunteered to foster rescue dogs thinking that this was a sure way of getting a new pup. But before a foster dog came her vet had a Yorkie in need of a home and Yankee joined the Bertram family.
Shortly after Yankee arrived, the rescue league called Cindy with a dog for her to foster, Molly.
...
After that, it wasn't unusual to see Cindy walking the halls of The Expo Group with a Yorkie who needed a new home tucked under her arm.
Cindy's efforts for the rescue league were so successful she was asked to serve as the State Director for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue in Texas. In 2001, Cindy and her husband fostered and found homes for 20 rescued Yorkies; in 2002 there were 16. Nine of the rescued dogs found homes within The Expo Group.
Cindy is the first to say it's easy. Most Yorkies are rescued because their owners love them but can't take care of them or don't have time. She has tried to quit her volunteer efforts twice, because her full-time TEG job keeps her pretty busy, but she can't leave the dogs in need.
"Everybody has their place, and this is mine," she says.
...
* Cindy and Rod Bertram have surrendered their hearts to Yorkies everywhere, most particularly those they live with: Yankee, far left, Gracie and Libby.
