Bill Berrett has played a "tremendous role" in keeping Dow Ludington in business, helping the plant not only survive but thrive.

He helped move Ludington's plant from one of declining profits and too many injuries in the 1990s, to the company's top performing site, of all 180 in the world, in 2005.

He was instrumental in working with Martin Marietta in Manistee to install a pipeline to supply the Ludington plant with semi-processed brine, which helped save the plant.

Those kind words and more were shared about Berrett Saturday as he was honored as Business Leader of the Year during the Ludington Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner at Ramada Inn.

Berrett quickly credited all 135 employees for the plant's success.

He said Dow's accomplishments have been a team effort. He named a few of those employees, those who attended the banquet, Doug Dunklow, Jeff Rhein and John Henderson, also thanking his own wife, Valerie, and special friends Ross and Kim Donley, who "kept me sane" through some of the most difficult times in recent years.

He said the friends "helped us establish roots here" in Ludington after they moved to Michigan from Atlanta in 1994.

"Atlanta's not a bad place … but Ludington has it in spades over Atlanta," he said.
    ...
"We all have roots here, we love the community and we love each other," Berrett said.
    ...
Reithel's letter went on to praise Berrett, stating, "His help and friendship have proved invaluable and I count myself fortunate to work with such an outstanding individual and great community leader."

Berrett is the calcium chloride general manager for Dow Chemical and the site leader and general manager of the Dow Ludington operations.

    He was honored by:
    ...
They credited Berrett with keeping Ludington's Dow plant open and operating.
    ...
Sibr made a donation in his honor to the United Way of Mason County and gave Berrett a Todd Reed photograph.

Its people, the 130 employees at the Ludington plant, are key to its success, said Bill Berrett, general manager, Dow Ludington Operations.

The report displays those employees' many accomplishments at the plant, but also their numerous community activities, which Dow encourages, from its Steppin' It Up to Clean Up program, in which Dow employees pick up trash on beaches, state park trails and after the Fourth of July parade, to the employees involvement in community and charitable organizations.

"It's a chance to share some of the details of what the company and employees are doing," Berrett said.
    ...
"I think that this may be a year that we break all of our prior production records," Berrett said.

"The oil field is a big market for us, that's booming," he said."And it was a strong winter last year, so we're restocking our supplies (of Peladow products)."

The report also dedicates a page to show how Dow Ludington is doing in its Vision of Zero push to have no injuries and no leaks or spills.

"We're not at zero yet," Berrett said.Although graphs show the trend is in the right direction, and in 2005, the company did hit zero in several categories.

"Relatively few accomplish that, but we did in '05," he said."We've got to get there year in and year out."

As for the future, Berrett envisions the level of employment to stay steady.

Dow Ludington has 130 employs now, "and I don't see it increasing," Berrett said.

He said as the plant makes more product, its computer-controlled processes tend to mean adding capital — equipment — rather than people.

    FEEDBACK

The report includes a comment card, a chance for community members to respond to the information and provide feedback about Dow's operations.

People may suggest ideas for improvement, providing "a two-way dialogue that we can use in a way to get better," Berrett said.

The closing is designed to streamline the company's Ludington operations, which currently employs about 225 people, Dow spokesman Bill Berrett said.

Berrett said the Ludington plant does not fit Dow's ideal plant profile in which the facility would be completely integrated and self-sustaining.

Other aspects of the Ludington facility remain profitable and will remain open, he told the Ludington Daily News.

"This does nothing but enhance our viability in this community," Berrett said.

    ...
Pipeline installation likely will begin in four to six weeks, Berrett said.He expects it to be complete in about a year.
