Dr. Steve Berkowitz, the chief medical officer for St. David's Health Care says stress is a given these days. As the Dow plummets, heart rates and blood pressure can soar.

Berkowitz says it's not clear whether stress itself is bad or what it makes people do.

"They tend not to do the very things that would be healthy for them otherwise. People tend to exercise less; people tend to eat worse," said Berkowitz.

Also, St. David's HealthCare has made improvements and expansions nearby with the addition of a helipad a few weeks ago to South Austin Hospital, one of five hospitals St. David's comprises, said Steve Berkowitz, chief medical officer of St. David's HealthCare.

"The earlier breast cancer is detected, especially before the patient starts to experience cancer symptoms, the better the chances that treatment will work," Steve Berkowitz, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of St. David's HealthCare, said.

"There's obviously handwashing, there's gowns we put on -- anything that comes from the patient, like their clothes would be put in isolation, put in bags and sealed so that we minimize any kind of contact," said Dr. Steve Berkowitz, chief medical officer at St. David's Healthcare.

Everyone, even family members, must where protective gear -- including a mask, gown, and gloves -- before entering the room. It's a precaution that can take its toll on patients, psychologically.

"Isolation of any kind is very difficult because here you are to begin with you're sick, you're not feeling well, you may be in some pain, and the people that you want close to you during those times cannot be as close," said Dr. Berkowitz.

"For over two decades this hospital has served not just Austin, but Buda, Kyle and beyond," said Steve Berkowitz, M.D., chief medical officer, St. David's HealthCare."With this helipad, working together with STAR Flight and Travis County EMS, we will continue to be able to provide the highest quality healthcare in a very timely manner."

With significant growth in southern Travis and Hays Counties, the volume of traffic on IH 35 has also increased, prompting hospital officials to consider adding a helipad to ensure ease of access for the many patients from across Central Texas in need of urgent care.

"If you live in Kyle, for instance, and you have a heart attack during the peak of rush hour traffic, an ambulance may not be able to reach you fast enough," Berkowitz said.

With rapid advances in technology and sophistication among subspecialty practices in general, many medical fields are seeing ramped-up demand for specialists and subspecialists, says Dr. Steve Berkowitz, chief medical officer for St. David's HealthCare.

Combined with the large number of young families moving here and having children in the Central Texas region, he says it's natural to expect that a large part of Austin-area hospital systems' recruitment efforts will focus on pediatric specialists in coming years.

The St. David's system will likely increase its pediatric subspecialist presence in its North Austin Medical Center and St. David's Medical Center campuses, Berkowitz says, as the neonatal intensive care units at those facilities grow.

A new women's center, planned to open in March 2009 at the North Austin Medical Center, will also mean an increase in demand for neonatal beds and pediatric specialists, Berkowitz says.

Scott & White, a new player in the hospital field in Central Texas, has addressed the demand by opening more regional clinics as growth creeps out from Austin and Round Rock urban centers.
