Bruce J. BergmanWidely recognized as the state's leading authority on mortgage foreclosures, Bruce Bergman heads the firm's mortgage foreclosure department.Author of New York's definitive text on the subject, the three-volume Bergman on New York Mortgage Foreclosures (Matthew Bender & Co., Inc., rev. 2000), he is also known for his regular real estate update column on mortgage foreclosure for the New York Law Journal, as well as regular columns in the New York Real Property Law Journal and Servicing Management.In all, he has written more than 250 articles in his field which have appeared in scholarly journals and professional publications throughout the country.
Mr. Bergman serves as a consultant to The New York Times on mortgage law and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Real Estate at New York University's Real Estate Institute where he teaches the mortgage foreclosure course and a special lecturer on law at Hofstra Law School.A member of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America School of Mortgage banking faculty, he has lectured before judicial seminars for New York State, and at St. John's and Touro Law Schools, as well as before the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau Academy of Law, the Consumer Bankers Association, Professional Education Systems, the Suffolk Academy of Law, and the National Business Institute, among many others.
A past director and four-term chairman of the Real Property Law Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association and former associate dean of the Nassau Academy of Law, Mr. Bergman is a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers; the USFN; Scribes, the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects; the American and New York State Bar Associations; and the American Arbitration Association for which he serves as an arbitrator.
A graduate of Cornell University and Fordham Law School, Mr. Bergman was three times elected City Councilman in Long Beach, New York, and served from 1980 through 1988.
Mr. Bergman is admitted to practice in the state of New York; District of Columbia; U.S. Supreme Court; U.S. Court of Claims; U.S. Tax Court; U.S. Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit; and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of New York.
