    The comments were made by Teresa Bergin, director of the Diploma programme at the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency. She said the first cohort of results for Diplomas, published last summer, had revealed many positives but also some issues that needed addressing.

    Referring to a need for quality assurance in the assessment process, within individual institutions, consortia and nationally, Ms Bergin said: "It is important for the credibility and the currency of these qualifications that we make sure it is a qualification of quality and rigour, and that the standards of Diplomas are understood.
