Prof Bentall, of the University of Bangor, said he gave Dr Persaud permission to use quotes from a paper he co-wrote for his book.He said he expected his work to appear in quotation marks and for it to be attributed to him.

He told the hearing in Manchester that his work appeared to have been "cut and pasted" and "tinkered with a bit... to fit the style of the rest of the book".

Drawing on his research over a period of more than two decades, Richard Bentall picks apart the science that underlies current mental health practice in the US and Europe. He examines how the effectiveness of psychiatric treatments has been measured, and shows how pharmaceutical industry manipulation has led to an exaggerated perception of what biological remedies can do. Surprising and humane, this book brings the experiences of both mental health service users and professionals into focus. Arguing that, in their search for technical fixes, modern psychiatric services have forgotten the power of compassion and caring relationships, Richard Bentall sets out to redefine our understanding of madness and its treatment in the twenty-first century.

Richard P. Bentall has held chairs in Clinical Psychology at the universities of Liverpool and Manchester, and is currently Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Bangor in Wales. He is known internationally for his research into the causes and treatment of severe mental illness, and his previous book, Madness Explained: Psychosis and Human Nature, won the British Psychological Society Book Award for 2004.
