Vicki Benson of Auburn High School remembers two years ago when school officials renamed vocational education "career education" so the classes could be at the front, instead of the back, of the curriculum guide.
"We have to work harder" at meeting the needs of students who are not certain what they want to do after high school, Benson said.

Busse, Benson and Christine Klekamp, director of the tech prep/dual credit program at Rock Valley College, spoke to the viewpoints board about their experiences and what tools they believe could fix the problem.

Benson, who administers grants at Auburn High School, sees the difference when students get that perspective.Auburn students in the Career Pathways program study fields ranging from nursing to graphic arts to computer-assisted design.They don't skip class.When the medical science students put on their scrubs, she said, they are different kids.
"They really believe in what they are doing.They really believe they are valuable.They really believe they are learning," Benson said.

Benson said she knows many solid B and C students just waiting for their talents to be recognized, their energies focused, their education made relevant.
