Dr. Vaughn Benson, dean of the School of Business and Industry at Wayne State College (WSC) received the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his oustanding contributions to adult and continuing education in Nebraska.In 1983, when Benson became dean of the WSC Business Division, most adult and continuing education in northeast Nebraska was limited to noncredit and lower division course work provided by Northeast Community College.At WSC, upper division and graduate course work was primarily limited to summer classes and a few evening courses each semester.Benson worked with Northeast Community College to develop an agreement between the institutions that would allow students to complete a baccalaureate degree in business administration in Norfolk.The initial goal was to enroll 30 to 40 students in the program - within the first year there were about 100 working adults participating.Seeing the enthusiasm for these continuing education courses, Benson went on to offer baccalaureate degrees in accounting and human resource management in Norfolk and finally the entire master of business administration degree.

He has since signed similar cooperative agreements with Central Community College in Columbus and Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City.When interactive distance learning was still in its infancy, Benson was a leader at WSC in encouraging the business faculty to integrate that technology into their teaching.Currently, he is in the process of developing upper division and graduate online courses and articulation agreements to meet the needs of an even more diverse adult audience.

Vaughn L. Benson, Ph.D., is a Professor of Business and Dean of the School of Business and Technology at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Dr. Benson holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Wayne State College, a Master of Science in Business Education from Wayne State College, and a Doctorate of Philosophy degree with emphasis areas in administration of higher education, financial accounting, public accounting, and management information systems from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Since 1974, Dr. Benson has been employed at Wayne State College as a faculty member, Division Head and Dean. Prior to a career in education, Dr. Benson worked in public accounting. In 2001, Dr. Benson was selected as the Nebraska Society of Certified Public Accountants Outstanding Accounting Educator.

Dr. Benson is the Dean of the School of Business & Technology at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Dr. Benson also serves on the IACBE Board of Commissioners. Dr. Benson received his B.S. and M.S.E. degrees from Wayne State College and his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska. In 2001, he was honored by the Nebraska Society of Public Accountants with its Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.
