If any lose their jobs, they shouldn't remain out of work long, says Northwood University automotive marketing professor Jeff Bennett.

"The skilled guys, the technicians, they won't have too much trouble finding jobs," Bennett said. "The seasoned, experience technician can almost go anywhere and find a job."

Every time a dealership closes, Bennett said, customers still have to go somewhere for service.

National chains such as Tuffy or Jiffy Lube "have the potential to increase," he said. Those on the sales end can still find employment too, Bennett said.

Many of Northwood's automotive marketing students come from dealership families. "As long as that family's store is viable, (the student will) have a secure future," Bennett said.

It appears the financial problems between Detroit restaurateur La-Van Hawkins and his former attorney may not be resolved despite the seizure of some of Hawkins' property Wednesday, which included $4,500 in cash, a diamond-encrusted Rolex watch and a wide-screen TV.

Add to that a significant decrease in leased vehicles - last summer General Motors and Chrysler pulled away from leasing, though GM recently re-entered the market - and in the near future you're likely to see fewer used cars to meet consumer demand, says Jeff Bennett, a professor of automotive marketing at Northwood University in Midland, Mich.

Already, used-car values have increased markedly over the past three months and will likely continue to do so, Bennett says. That's particularly good news for car owners who are upside-down on their auto loans, or owe more to the bank than their cars are worth. "The average individual who owed $20,000 on a car that was worth $15,000 may now have a car that's worth $16,000 or $17,000," Bennett says.
