Colin Bennett, a first-year graduate student and outreach coordinator of the Environmental Futurists, gave a copy of the proposal Wednesday to Ronald Heron, vice president of student and university affairs.

"We're asking Southern Connecticut State University to achieve carbon neutrality," Bennett said, through conservation, efficiency, greater use of public transportation and carpooling, and alternative sources of energy.
Bennett said the university should be able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to "close to zero."

"We're willing to do our part, but the president needs to take leadership," Bennett said.

Bennett said SCSU's carbon dioxide emissions are unknown.The cost of reducing emissions is also not clear, he said.Bennett said SCSU could cut its electric bill by employing solar cells, wind power and fuel cells.
"We want to be a good neighbor to the city and the state," Bennett said.
