During the last two years, the growth of mobile and broadband services has overtaken the slowing fixed-line market, thus creating a shift in how telecom services are being regulated in Latin America, says Yankee Group analyst Colin Bennett.
As a rule, it looks like an interventionist tide is rising, and a heightened emphasis on number portability could set the stage for significant market share change in some markets, possibly including Mexico and Brazil.
Mexico implemented number portability on July 12, 2008, but with scant evidence of much impact so far.
The initial amount of ported numbers was reported at 10,000 after five days, which pales in comparison to the more than 90 million fixed and mobile lines in Mexico, says Bennett.
