"There are a lot more craftsmen who do lumber work," said Don Bender, CEO of Bender Chaffey Corporation, a multimillion-dollar custom home-building company in Kirkland, Wash.
Bender said his company used steel framing once about four years ago, but they have not tried it since.
"We had a bad experience," he said. The largest hurdle for residential steel framing, according to Bender, is finding reliable and qualified people to do the job.Another drawback Bender said he encountered happened after the steel framework was in place. The other contractors, like plumbers and electricians, he explained, were unfamiliar with installing their wires and pipes onto the steel framework.
