Newly elected Apple Valley Unified School Board member Dennis Bender received more votes in the recent election than any other candidate in any council, school board or special district race in the Victor Valley.
It's not surprising because Bender, who received more than 13,000 votes, has been working on the mother of all grass-roots campaigns.
For more than 40 years, Bender taught history to Apple Valley high schoolers, secretly building a support base unprecedented in local elections.
Bender has taught several thousand students over the years, many of whom have remained in Apple Valley and a number of whom are now elected leaders or opinion makers.
He even managed to get the owner of the Boston Red Sox — a former student — to write an endorsement letter.
I never thought we'd see this kind of gerrymandering in such a local race, but Bender slowly instituted a political ploy that nobody saw coming.
I remember innocently sitting in his class eight years ago learning about U.S. history.
Little did I know he was subliminally programming students to immediately recognize his name should it ever appear on a ballot.
Way to go Bender.
