``People have limited budgets for charitable support , and organizations like ours are consciously watching the trends to see if there was any substitutional giving , '' said Dennis Bender , spokesman for Habitat for Humanity International , one of the country's 10 biggest nonprofit groups.
The reeling stock market already has left foundations , companies and individuals with less money to give , forcing philanthropic organizations , from local soup kitchens to international medical groups , to rethink their budgets.
The economy is headed for a recession and consumer confidence has plunged , further fueling worries that Americans will become less generous.In addition , charities get much of their funding in the fourth quarter , which this year comes just as economic conditions are worsening and attack-related donations are pouring in.

``We're not trying to discourage people from contributing to anyone else , '' said Bender from home builder Habitat for Humanity , ``but we're reminding them that while there's a tragic need from this horrible incident , there are many people in this country and around the world who are still homeless and we would very much like to continue our work and depend on their charitable giving to do so.''.
