In recent months, Carlos Benavides, president of CityView TV, Austin's first hotel-welcome channel for tourists, has been faced with one of his most significant business challenges yet: competition.
    ...
But Benavides isn't too worried. His response to the newfound competition is simple: Work harder to secure more hotels and clients in Austin, and expand the company to other markets.

CityView TV, which employs five people, is currently available in more than 20 Austin hotels, and the company has about 30 local clients who pay to advertise on the closed-circuit channel. One of its newest clients is the Austin Toros basketball team.

"But in order to keep growing the company, I felt like we had to go into other markets," Benavides says. "So we're now working on expanding the service for South Padre and Brownsville. CityView should be up and running in Brownsville by October 1."

So far, Benavides has secured seven hotels on South Padre Island and 19 hotels in his home town of Brownsville. He's also considering expanding to Houston and would like to take the service international as well.

"I really want to expand to Monterrey, Mexico," he says.
    ...
"We've had CityView TV for about four years, and I'm very pleased with the service they provide and with our relationship with Carlos," says Bill Scull, director of sales and marketing for the Marriott at the Capitol in Austin.
    ...
With the addition of the real-time capabilities, Benavides says it costs CityView about $1,500 to get a hotel set up with the service.
