Memorial markers will stay up for seven years, Belluschi said. Families will have the opportunity to renew signs for another seven years.

Pending legislation calls for DUI offenders to pay for a portion of the signs. That legislation currently sits in the Senate Rules Committee, Belluschi said.

Marti Belluschi, a gravely injured DUI crash survivor who serves on the board of the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, says that although AAIM "strongly favors the concept" of the legislation, the group would prefer some requirement for evaluation and counseling before anybody is issued a BAIID. "Before somebody is able to get behind the wheel, they need to be taking action toward changing their behavior and dealing with their problem," she says.

As members of the task force, the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, or AAIM, has long advocated for the signs, AAIM spokeswoman Marti Belluschi said.

The purpose of the program is threefold.

"While the program is there to memorialize these terrible tragedies and this horrible loss of life, it's also an excellent prevention tool for our state to get the word out and remind people that drunken driving kills," Belluschi said.

That woman, Marti Belluschi, is a member of the Schaumburg-based Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, which provides speakers to high schools, said Pat Larson, the group's state director of victim services.
