LAND - O' LAKES - Nearly 12 months after stepping down as Mitchell's baseball coach to pursue a career in administration, Phillip Bell is back in the world of sports.
...
Bell will replace Kit Broadbelt, who retired in July after spending more than a decade as the county's athletic director.
...
"It sounds a little corny, but you're talking about a dream come true for me," said Bell, 37.
...
"With the growth, it's becoming a large task and we felt comfortable with Phil in the area of the athletic programs as well as the athletic facilities."
Bell, an assistant principal at Hudson High since July, is not new to organizing an athletic program. He was the first baseball coach at Mitchell, compiling a 54-81 record in five seasons and winning the school's first district title in 2004 before stepping down in December. He also was the coach at Gulf and Central and was an assistant baseball coach at River Ridge.During those years he also was an assistant football coach.
While at Mitchell, Bell was the physical education, driver's education and ROTC department head as well as the Sunshine Athletic Conference baseball chairman for the past six years.
In all, his coaching career has spanned 17 years.
...
"I think Phil has demonstrated through the years of his leadership in athletics - and he really did a fantastic job here at Mitchell as the head baseball coach - that he is very organized, always had a good vision of what things should be like in the athletic world, and I think he'll do an unbelievable job as the county athletic director.
"He understands what needs to be done in Pasco County and has a pretty good rapport with all of the coaches in the area, so I think it's good to have somebody that people are familiar with and will also do a decent job at getting things where they should be."
Bell was one of three finalists for the position. The others were a Pasco County middle school athletic director and an assistant principal from Hillsborough County.
Bell made the decision to leave coaching and enter the administration side of schooling after he completed his master's program at Saint Leo University and passed the state's test.It also allowed him to spend more time with his wife and two daughters.
