The chairman of Bell Potter, Mr Colin Bell said: "We are excited to be a part of the early development of USCOM.

Bell Potter's chief executive, Colin Bell, says he was surprised by Advent's decision.

"We're one of their biggest clients, and we were certainly surprised by the whole thing," he told ZDNet Australia.

He indicated that the company was likely to ditch the Advent solution in the long term.

"We can't be reliant on system support coming out of [Los Angeles]," he said.

The latest Business Roundtable, which begins on the previous page, examined the wave of floats and it's worth summarising some of the tips offered by the four participants - Peter Guy, a consultant with small cap specialist fund manager, Warakirri Asset Management, Brett Paton, the managing director of capital markets at investment bank UBS, Greg Bundy, the chairman of boutique investment bank Equity Capital Markets (and a former chief executive of Merrill Lynch in this country) and Colin Bell, chief executive of Bell Potter Securities, a specialist retail broker affiliated with UBS.

But Bell Potter Securities chief executive Colin Bell said the deal would help the bank compete well after the T3 float.

"Deutsche has got a big investment banking business but there's nothing that they could lay claim to as being retail distribution," Mr Bell said.

But the guess would be that Alastair Provan and Colin Bell were the ones on the same sort of big money.
