Ritchie also made a critical contribution to botany in the Southeast. He is the recipient of the Silver Seal Award from the National Council of State Garden Clubs in 1979 for his work with the North Carolina Botanical Garden and with plant conservation ; it is a tribute to his life-long work. More recently , Ritchie has received the Tom Dodd , Jr. Award of Excellence for his understanding , promotion and use of native plants in North America ( the 11th annual presentation at the Native Plant Conference in Cullowhee in 1997 ) ; the Flora Caroliniana Award for his lifelong contributions to scholarly and popular literature in botany and the promotion of conservation ( by the North Carolina Botanical Garden 1999 ) ; and the W.A. Bartholomew Award in recognition and appreciation of distinguished service to botany and the public ( presented by the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society , April , 2000 ).
