    Mr Bell had a lifelong affiliation with Stanford University and served as a Trustee.He pursued his interest in history, geography and international relations by traveling extensively in the United States and abroad.He also consulted with members of the Korean Stock Exchange and contributed to its development.

    He served as a Naval Commander in the Pacific during World War II, where he was active in the Pacific theater, at Guam, Wake, Midway and the Philippines.

    Mr Bell began his career as an investment advisor at Schwabacker and Company and worked at Bank of America before joining Merrill Lynch, where he was a Vice President and Manager of the Beverly Hills office.He served at Merrill Lynch until he retired in 1972.He also served as Treasurer for the City of Beverly Hills for 20 years.

    After retiring he moved to Santa Barbara, where his wife, Laura Louise, had lived as a child.He continued to be active in the community and spent much of his time in philanthropic works.A Rotarian for over 50 years, he served as a Director of the Santa Barbara Foundation, Montecito Association, the Santa Barbara Historical Society, Cottage Hospital and Casa Dorinda.He helped raise funds for a new building for the Montecito Fire Department, helped the Visiting Nurses Association and assisted in the drive to set aside land for a park in Montecito.He and his wife Laura Louise, who passed away in 1997, were very active supporters of Cottage Hospital, continuing a family tradition begun by Laura's mother, Agnes Patten Parma.

    He is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Harbourne of Westlake Village, California and Beverly, who lives in Virginia, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

    The family conducted a private memorial service.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Cottage Hospital, Visiting Nurses Association and Adventures in Caring.
