Chet Bell's Working Family
...
Chet Bell's working family includes his own household in the Waukesha County community of Mukwonago.Teaching is the family occupation, with Chet on the faculty at Marquette University, where he is adjunct assistant professor in the performing arts program, specializing in stage lighting design. His wife, Susan, is a public school teacher at Muskego High School, where she teaches Spanish.
In any working family, the work of child-rearing is paramount, and Chet's and Susan's parenting effort is devoted to their three sons, Harry (15), Sam (11) and Joseph (six months).
Chet Bell's interest in running for public office springs from the household in which he grew up, where political blood was passed along.Jeannette Bell, Chet's mother, was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly for fourteen years and currently is the mayor of West Allis.
"From my mother, I've learned the importance of being straight with people, saying what you mean, and working hard for what you believe," Chet says.
Among Jeannette Bell's legislative accomplishments was her authorship and sponsorship of the Children's Trust Fund, a program to reduce child abuse utilizing prevention programs, and the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, which administers the fund.
The Wisconsin Blue Book description of the program states a 16-member board: "awards grants to community-based programs and family resource centers that prevent child abuse and neglect by strengthening families. The board provides education on prevention and positive parenting through printed materials and informational seminars. It recommends policies to the legislature, governor, and state agencies to protect children and support prevention activities.Funding is derived through charges on duplicate birth certificates, the sale of the ‘Celebrate Children' special license plate, federal matching funds, and private contributions."
Another skill Jeannette Bell taught and instilled in her son is an understanding of the importance of listening, which will serve Chet in good stead as he seeks to uphold the kind of public listening modeled by our Senator Russ Feingold, who has fulfilled pledges to hold regular listening sessions in all areas he represents.
Chet's father - also Chet - and mother are the authors of County Parks of Wisconsin: 600 Parks You Can Visit Featuring 25 Favorites. The book was originally published by Trails Books in 2000, and prompted an on-line reviewer to mention he'd checked the volume out of a library and by the time he'd looked up the information he was interested in, he figured he'd better buy the book.In addition to the traits learned from his mother, Chet also cites his father's parenting example as important.
"My dad taught me respect, treating people the way you want to be treated," Chet says."I'd like to think I am good father because of him."
Chet tells an interesting story about how his parents met: "Both sets of my grandparents were florists, but that is not how my parents met. They met in the UWM scenic studio as my mother was active in the theatre.I really don't know why my dad was there."
Whatever the reason, we're predicting Wisconsin's First Congressional District will be glad he was.
