We are asking what can we as federal government do to increase your production capability , says Charles Bell , a supervisor at the United States Marine Corps Marine Nuclear , Biological and Chemical Equipment Division in Quantico , Va. Another worry : finding enough material to produce protective suits and training workers to assemble them.
Despite the obvious anxiety among the public about anthrax outbreaks and other germ warfare , local officials might do well to hold off buying fancy new detectors. In a draft version of a guide for purchasing biological-detection equipment issued this month , the United States Department of Justice warns such devices have limited utility. It is strongly recommended that first responders be very careful when considering a purchase of any device that claims to detect ( biological warfare ) agents , the guide states.
What's more , cities might not need such devices , since a germ attack , in particular , might not be discovered for days or weeks after the contamination , as the current anthrax incidents show. By then , public-health officials and federal investigators could be on the scene with their own sophisticated machinery. -
