Beverly explained that Exeter-based CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Children) and Sargent Cancer Care for Children merged in January to become the UK's leading children's cancer care charity. Its nurses provide specialist care and support at hospital, at home and in the community. It supports a child's family, helps the children to cope with their illness, and runs homes so that parents, children and their brothers and sisters can stay together. Grants and other benefits are available to families through the charity which also funds research into the causes, treatments and needs of children and young people with cancer, and their families. It has no government funding and Beverly added that although it is a national charity, this money would be spent locally. It has social workers based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital plus two CLIC Sargent nurses working there in Bramble Ward. "This money will pay for the nurses for quite a time, it is an amazing amount of money," Beverly added.
