Andy Ball leads Webcor in citizenship
    ...
Strong convictions: ,Any business with any success has a moral responsibility to give back to its community,, says Andy Ball, shown here at Webcor,s Infinity towers project.
    ...
For Andy Ball, generosity is not just a personal trait, but a corporate attitude as well.

When Ball came to Webcor Builders, now the largest structural concrete contractor in California, in 1994, he found teams with an us-against-them mentality, with employees hoarding information and using it for their own advancement.

"I wanted to change the culture around," he said. "I told people, ,we're giving you stock, but its value doesn't rise unless the company does well.'

"So many companies are a collection of individuals doing their own thing," he said.

Insular thinking worked against the company's success, Ball said. It wasn't enough for one employee team to do well; the new order at Webcor encouraged sharing of information so everyone would do well.

Instead of annual reviews that Ball felt had little meaning, the company began defining every job and the skills it required.

"We started an analysis of each person's skills. We looked at what training they needed, and we helped people become better at what they did," he said.

That made it possible for people to define a career path and get the skills they needed.

Ball doesn't just talk the talk, according to Kerry Boyd, Webcor's vice president of marketing.
    ...
Then an employee told Ball she planned to join a walk for the American Heart Association. He encouraged her to invite colleagues.

The result, said Boyd: "The AHA raised $90,000, and Andy matched $30,000.

For Webcor's CEO, Andy Ball, going high tech practically became a crusade. The San Mateo, California, builder of apartment buildings, hotels, and office parks pulls in $500 million a year in revenue.Yet the architects, subcontractors, and designers who partner with Webcor wouldn't relinquish their paper drawings."We were sending reams of documents, including memos and minutes of meetings, back and forth," Ball said.He wanted everyone working on a project to collaborate online. He found his solution in ProjectNet from Blueline Online.
    ...
Despite his optimistic projections, in early 1999 Ball ran into big problems getting everyone to accept the new method.
    ...
But Ball said he chose Blueline over companies like BidCom because it "bent over backward to develop the product the way it would work for us.
    ...
Tech-savvy CEOs like Andy Ball always seem to be messing with a good thing.Despite formidable odds, he believed that designers, architects, subcontractors, and building owners should be able to collaborate digitally. He wanted to move his company and its partners to an online meeting place where they could post, send, or edit complex CAD drawings and digital photos, memos, status reports, and project history. The answer? An application called ProjectNet, hosted on Blueline Online's own servers.Ball has gotten a lot of resistance to the system—it's not easy to learn—but he knows that anything is better than paper drawings and snail mail. He's so confident about getting a good return that he plans to eventually reject bids from companies who refuse to use the system.
