   Dr. Samuel L. Belknap, of Damariscotta, passed away at his home in Damariscotta on Jan. 13 after a long illness. He was born on Sept. 1, 1921, a son of Dr. Robert and Martha (Chapman) Belknap. Sam graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1939 and Bowdoin College in 1943. After college, during WWII he worked at the Naval Reserve Laboratory, Washington D.C., as a chemist. He received his MD degree from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1948, and interned at Maine Medical Center from 1948-1950. He then joined his father's medical practice in Damariscotta where he practiced for many years. In 1999 the second floor of Miles Memorial Hospital, where Sam was Chief of Staff for many years, was dedicated to Dr. Belknap and his partner, Dr. Ralph Powell, for their many years of service.

   Sam was a member of Jake's Rangers, a group of avid sportsmen, who were featured in articles by Edmund Ware Smith for the magazine Field & Stream.

   Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing, lobstering and golf. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Lucy; his son Samuel II and his wife Barbara; his grandson Samuel III; two sisters, Ruth Bickford and Martha (Tiny) Reed and two brothers, Robert Jr. and David, all of Damariscotta. Sam was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra, and his brother James.
