Brentwood was hot news in the spring of 1381 when at least 5,000 peasants from Stanford-le-Hope, Fobbing and Corringham came to the town to confront Sir Robert Belknap, Chief Justice of Common Pleas, who had been sent to enforce collection of taxes throughout the Hundred of Barstable and to send him packing.

During the Revolt three local jurors were murdered, after Robert Belknap, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and his retinue, were molested by reluctant villagers at Brentwood.
