DANIEL N. BELIN
Daniel N. Belin, founder of Belin Associates, has over thirty years of extensive hands-on experience in both the non-profit organization and foundation worlds as a Board member, lawyer and strategic consultant.
Mr. Belin's principal volunteer work has been as a member of the board of trustees of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). His work as a LACMA trustee has spanned 25 years. It has been particularly focused on issues of finance, development, acquisitions and working with the museum's directors and various curators on a day-to-day basis. He has participated in the design and successful completion of LACMA programs to raise more than $100 million for capital, endowment and acquisition purposes. He served as president and chairman of the LACMA board of trustees for an eight-year period.
Mr. Belin has served as a trustee of a number of other major organizations, including the Carnegie Institution of Washington, the Board of Advisors of the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture (as a member and as co-chair), the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association the Music Center of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles World Affairs Council. He also served for five years as a member of the Trustee's Council of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Belin has advised and served the foundation community in various capacities over the past thirty years. As a practicing lawyer, he provided a number of foundations with ongoing counseling and advice. He represented foundations in the successful resolution of a variety of disputes with regulatory authorities, and in a number of litigations through the trial and appellate courts.
Mr. Belin served as a member of the board of trustees of The Ahmanson Foundation in Los Angeles for more than 20 years, and has served for more than 10 years as a member of the board of trustees of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in New York. He currently is vice-chair of the Kress Foundation. Both the Kress and Ahmanson foundations are heavily focused in providing support for museums and in the arts and art education.
Mr. Belin's legal career was as a partner in the 250 lawyer firm McKenna Conner & Cuneo, of Los Angeles and Washington, and as the founding partner of Belin Rawlings & Badal in Los Angeles. He served as managing partner of both firms.
Mr. Belin received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, from which he was graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He worked as a mathematician in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Project Mercury before entering Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1962.
Mr. Belin formed the firm Belin Consulting, a predecessor to Belin Associates, five years ago.
