Judge Belew was born on city's North Side, and the family moved to West Fort Worth when he was 2. He was in the first graduating class from what is now Arlington Heights High School in 1938.

He attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and the University of Texas at Austin before joining the Army in 1942.

Like his father, he served in the Army's 90th Infantry Division, rising to the rank of captain. He was wounded at least three times – once seriously – and received the Silver Star, three Purple Hearts and five Battle Stars. Mr. Kelly said that Judge Belew was one of the first soldiers to hit Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion of World War II.
    ...
Mrs. Belew said that her husband didn't discuss his war efforts much with his family until he was interviewed for a Walter Cronkite television special about the 50th anniversary of D-Day.

He received his bachelor's degree in 1946 and his law degree in 1948, both from UT-Austin. After law school, Judge Belew went to work for his father, and soon became an assistant U. S. attorney in Fort Worth. In 1952, he joined the Fort Worth firm of Cantey & Hanger, where he became a partner and remained until his appointment to the federal bench.

S.G. Johndroe III, a longtime member of the firm, said Judge Belew was his uncle, making the law offices a family affair.

    ...
Mrs. Belew said that's just the kind of man her husband was, a man so loved and respected that even his grandchildren affectionately called him "Judge."

"He loved the law and he loved interpreting the Constitution," said Mrs. Belew, who married her husband in 1989. "He wanted to be remembered as a judge who gave a lawyer his time in court. He wanted everyone to feel comfortable in his courtroom. He just always tried to make people feel good."

Judge Belew was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Mitchell Belew, who passed away in 1984.

FORT WORTH - Retired federal Judge David O. Belew Jr., a decorated veteran of World War II and a jurist known for his humor and compassion, died Wednesday. He was 81.

In September 1989, Mr. Belew ruled that the crash's sole cause was the Delta crew's decision to try to land during a storm. Mr. Belew absolved air-traffic controllers and meteorologists of fault after concluding that their warnings would not have deterred the Delta crew from landing.

Delta's lawyers appealed, but Mr. Belew's ruling survived through the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.
