    David L. Belew of Hamilton was presented the Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award at The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) annual Evening of Excellence.He is the retired Chairman & CEO of the Beckett Paper Company.

    "Dave has served OFIC as a trustee from 1988 to the present and also serves on the Marketing Committee, offering his considerable experience in business and public relations.

    Mr. Belew has given of his time and expertise to numerous causes and organizations, including the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund, National Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Hamilton County Foundation, Open Door Pantry, and Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra, to name just a few.

    His many awards include Hamilton's "I CARE" Award for community service, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Award for Distinguished Service and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and the Hamilton Journal News.

    Mr. Belew and his wife Margery reside in Hamilton and have a son, a daughter and six grandchildren with whom they share their numerous activities, particularly piano and tennis.

    "Think of all the companies we had," said Dave Belew, retired president of Beckett Paper Co."We were making submarine parts here.Many of the industries were revved up for war."

    What might be called Hamilton's industrial golden age began in May 1848, when Beckett Paper opened for business.At the time, just 3,200 people lived in Hamilton.

    "There was this nucleus of major companies and a network of people who ran them," he said."Most of them were headquartered here.It was incredible."

    But by 1962, 25 to 43 percent of the city's industrial jobs had vanished.

    They absolutely do, says David L. Belew, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the chamber and the Journal-News.

    "As a board member and former president of the Hamilton Community Foundation, I am aware of a number of examples of their reaching out and quietly providing funds to meet community needs," he said.

    "Although some of the Carrutherses' philanthropic gifts are public, many are private and anonymous."

    In addition to the hospital contribution, the Carrutherses announced a $2.5 million gift to fund an addition to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts.They also have established scholarship funds for local students, helped in renovating the Hamilton High School gym and were there with funds when Wilson Junior High School suffered a devastating fire.

    Dave Belew Named Trustee Emeritus

    As Dave Belew neared the end of his term as a Hamilton Community Foundation Trustee, he may have experienced some thoughts of "retirement" from the Foundation.He may have given consideration to enjoying some additional free time or maybe using his many skills and talents for another organization.Any thoughts of parting ways with the Foundation quickly vanished when Dave was appointed Trustee Emeritus at the Foundation's Annual Meeting."We didn't want to lose the incredible knowledge, passion and commitment Dave brings to the Foundation", stated Board Chair, Craig Wilks.
