Lucile was elected to the City Council of Lansing in 1955, where she served for 39 years. She served as chairperson of every standing committee on the Council, including President, for five years. Lucile was also active on many intergovernmental boards and commissions, and served on Boards for health, the arts, and convention/visitors bureau. She has been the recipient of almost every award in the community including the prestigious Diana Award from the YWCA. In addition, a hospital outpatient pavilion at Ingham Medical Center was named the Belen Pavilion recognizing her 23 years of leadership on the hospital Board of Trustees.
Lucile continues to be active in the operation of Belen's Flowers, a family business since 1936, and where in 1951, she established Belen's School of Floral Design, one of the first such schools in the country. She is also active in the Zonta Club of Lansing where she has been a member for 43 years. -

Lucile has been a backbone of the Capitol City since she was elected to the City Council in 1957. During her 39 years of continuous service, her forthright manner, courage and compassion for people have made her a role model for Lansing-area men and women. While on the council, she served as president, chairperson of every standing committee, and a key member of almost every ad hoc committee. She also participated in many intergovernmental boards, including the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and the Capital Area Transit Authority.

In addition to her public service, Lucile owned Belen's Flowers, a family business that was started in 1936. In 1951, she established Belen's School of Floral Design.
Among her many awards: Woman of the Year by the Altrusa Club, induction into the Business Hall of Fame at Lansing Community College, and the Community Service Award from the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. This past fall, she was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame.
